One thing that keeps happening to me as I write is a scene needs to become two scenes. Or even three scenes. If only one thing happens in a scene then cut. When a new setting starts or a new event happens then it’s time to write break into a new scene.
For example I had my characters in a space ship that was getting tractor beamed into a space station and then they find a way to get off the ship and hide in the space station. But that’s two different things. So I ended the scene when the ship was being tractor beamed into the space station. I started a new scene in which the main event was the characters getting off the ship without getting noticed.
Use your instincts. If you’re writing and it feels like the end of the scene, it probably is.
