Friday’s Findings: Bullet Point Outline – Do you do it?

Want to write a rough draft of a scene like a champ? For a while now I’ve been trying this method using bullet points. It’s not my invention, but it makes sense to me.

Here’s the short version:

  • Spend some time thinking about what needs to happen in the scene.
  • As you think, type out your thoughts in a bullet list like the one you’re reading now.
  • When you’ve exhausted all your thoughts about the scene, rearrange them in the order you want to narrate the scene.
  • Start writing the scene above the bullet list. Focus only on the top item in the list and write about that bullet entry until you’re done.
  • Delete that bullet item and go on to the next one and repeat.
  • Do this for every bullet item on the list, and ta-da, you have a rough draft.

This method is pretty simple. And it actually speeds up the writing process because it puts me in the writing zone instantly. I can focus on just one thing at a time.

You may already do something similar. But here’s a champion of the scene bullet list . . .

Fantasy author Bethany Atazadeh does a great job of explaining and demonstrating the bullet point scene technique in detail during this video:
