A book on fiction writing is ideal because you’re getting a course in writing at your fingertips. You can read or listen to the book at your own convenience. And best of all, you don’t have to take a final. Unless finishing your story is the final.
Anyway, here are some books on the writing craft I recommend:
- Writing Fiction, Tenth Edition: A Guide to Narrative Craft by Janet Burroway , Elizabeth Stuckey-French , Ned Stuckey-French
Excellent lessons tested for the beginning writer from a university professor. - Writing Great Fiction: Storytelling Tips and Techniques by James Hynes
If you are looking for a great audiobook on the writing craft, this is the one. - The Art of Fiction: Notes on Craft for Young Writers by John Gardner
This classic is a little more advanced, but highly recommended. - About Writing by Gareth L. Powell
Practical advice on writing in the 21st century and an excellent chapter on protocol at a writing conference. - The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression by Becca Puglisi and Angela Ackerman
I use this while writing when I need either physical actions or internal feelings for a specific emotion. Easy and quick to use.
