One way I’m building up my word count for NaNoWriMo is by using flashbacks. My main characters have a complex backstory (don’t they always?) and I’m finding it’s a great way to keep me on top of my daily statistics.
But using flashbacks can help in other ways. They can move the story forward. They can offer insight on subtext. They can give the characters motivation. They can create conflict. They can give insight to a character’s flaws. I could go on, but in the end, flashbacks are a great tool for a writer during NaNoWriMo.
The question is: will a flashback actually be used in the final story? Maybe. Maybe not. But NaNoWriMo is an excellent opportunity for writers to build their craft in so many ways. So, go ahead. Write that flashback. No one has to see it except for you.
