I passed up 10,000 words. Only 5,000 to go. I’m fleshing out the last ten or so scenes of my WIP I did for my 2019 NaNoWriMo project by just writing dialogue. I’m using what I call “layering” in the narrative elements:
- Dialogue
- Action
- Reaction/Internal Thought
- Emotions/voice cues, facial expressions, body language, visceral reactions
- Senses/Description
- Setting/Atmosphere
- Backstory
- More action and dialogue as it comes to you
Using dialogue is a great way for me to built an even more fleshed out version of the outlines and summaries I have for these scenes. Then I’ll go back and add in the other elements listed above. It just works for me. The words are flowing.
Here’s the blog entry where I talk about laying in fictional elements.
If you haven’t tried this layering in method of writing a scene, give it a whirl and see how it goes.
