Although we live in the same city, Kyle and I have never had the chance to meet in person. He’s a prolific writer and I’ve read a couple of his fantasy, horror and science fiction books. I’m honored he responded to an interview for my blog. Check out his Amazon Author page.
How did you decide to become an author?
It happens all the time. I’ll be walking around, minding my own business, and…BAM! I get a story idea. I’m not an artist or a filmmaker; writing is the only way to get these stories out of my head! And just about the time I finish one novel and finally feel at peace, the next idea comes to me, and I have no choice but to start it all again. I think many writers will tell you that writing is something they have to do, even when it drives them crazy. Fortunately, I love writing, so it’s a good problem for me to have.
How does your professional background help with your writing?
For me, it’s been the reverse! My love of writing has spilled into my professional career. After graduating from medical school, I elected to pursue nonclinical options rather than complete a residency so I could concentrate on my fiction writing. Because of my background in writing, I was able to pick up work as a medical writer to pay the bills.
Can you tell us more about why you wrote your latest books?
My latest books include Seeking to Devour, a supernatural thriller about a werewolf outbreak in rural Kentucky, and the Tales of Fál, a collection of novellas and stories set in the same world as Warden of Fál, my epic fantasy series.
Seeking to Devour took me almost 10 years to write and revise. It’s a fast-paced thriller full of twists and turns. I wrote it because I wanted a book where werewolves acted like actual monsters.
The Tales of Fál came about as a way to delve deeper into the characters and stories in my Warden of Fál series. The stories focus on heroes, villains, and everything in between with monsters and magic thrown in for extra fun!
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Write! It can be a long, painful process (at least at first) but it’ll be worth it in the end if you’re doing what you love. The best ways to get better at writing are to read and write. Writing is like a muscle. The more you work at it the better you get at it.
What are some upcoming publishing projects you are working on?
The Whispers of the Crows, a sequel to The Keeper of the Crows (my debut novel), will be my next published novel. My publisher should be releasing it any time now, and I believe it will be out in May. (Fingers crossed!)
As far as writing goes, I plan to write the eighth and final installment in my Tales of Fál series. Then I’ll collect all the stories in one anthology.
For audio lovers, the third audiobook in my Warden of Fál series should be out in May as well.
Future goals include finishing revisions on an old horror manuscript featuring banshees and eventually writing the fifth novel in my Warden of Fál series.
