A couple weeks ago, I reviewed my annual scary book for Halloween, and this year it was Crumb Hill by Ethan Renoe.
It’s been a while since I featured an author interview, so I thought it was only natural to ask Renoe – who happens to be the editor of a non-fiction book I’m working on – to tell us about the books he’s written.
Renoe’s latest is a series called Crumb Hill. If you’re looking for something with a little dark humor, a little strange mythos, and a little small-town creepiness, I recommend Crumb Hill: A Town History. Here are a few words from Renoe himself:

Ethan Renoe
How/Why did you decide to become an author?
Probably 5th grade. I wrote a 50-page story by hand, inspired by Lord of the Rings, as well as ninjas and Castevania and James Bond and the film XXX with Vin Diesel. So as you can imagine, the mashup was legendary.
How does your professional background help with your writing?
Well I got two degrees in writing before going on to study Theology, so those helped a lot! None of my actual professional experience has helped very much at all though.
Can you tell us more about why you wrote your latest books?
I’ve always been a fan of horror and spooky stuff, though not a fan of gore and actual evil stuff, so that’s where Crumb Hill emerged from. It’s for people who love the aesthetic and creepy, weird, mysterious stuff, but don’t want to be traumatized. And many others have gotten on board with the brand, and Crumb Hill has been taking off, so I’ll keep making it all as long as people are into it!
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
There are two ways to get better at writing, and someone MUST do BOTH to be a good writer: They must read a lot and they must write a lot. There aren’t really exceptions. A third would be to go out and experience as many diverse things as they can, from skydiving over Medellin to dancing Bachata in La Paz. Or even walking the same 2-mile loop around their neighborhood everyday for a year and noting everything about it. You won’t become a good writer by scrolling through Instagram all day.
What are some upcoming publishing projects you are working on?
The fourth and most in-depth Crumb Hill Book! And I also have half of How to Understand the Entire Universe, Part 2 written.
