The following are two completely different books for the writer. One is about a structured process and the other is about organically discovering your creativity. We can benefit from both.

Save the Cat Writes a Young Adult Novel by Jessica Brody
I just finished Jessica Brody’s Save the Cat Writes a Young Adult Novel and I feel more inspired to get my novel done than ever. She breaks down a myriad of young adult novels using the Save the Cat beats–and I want to try every one of them. Not only is this writing craft book a godsend for anyone writing a young adult novel, but it’s an excellent future reference book for writing projects down the line. I know I’m going to be coming back to this book again and again over the years.

The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin
The Creative Act isn’t even directly about writing, but anyone who considers themselves a creative can benefit. And that includes fiction writers. This quick read discusses concepts in the creative ways.
I had to start this book twice. The second time, I opened up my mind and didn’t try to read the book as a writer. But somehow, I got more out of it that way. I was able to tell myself, “Oh, I can see how I can use this in my writing life.”
f you are an artist of any kind–a painter, a writer, a musician, whatever — The Creative Act: A Way of Being will help bring out the methods and mindsets to your processes.
