Scare Me Up: Horror Books for This Halloween Season

Last night I did this goofy thing in the spirit of Halloween. I turned off all the lights and listened to an audio version of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher. It’s less than an hour long and super creepy. I recommend you do the same thing with a short and spooky story.

In the meantime, here are some novels I’ve read that fall into the category of horror:

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

They eat books. They roam around us in secret. They get their knowledge of the world from eating books. They are the book eaters. This creepy novel makes me wish I could just automatically know everything in a book by eating it, but I would miss regular food too much. Devon and her young son are in hiding from her own people. Through a series of backstories and present-day cat and mouse games, the story of how Devon ended up in her current situation is revealed. Really enjoyed this mix of fantasy, horror and thriller.

Bad Parts by Brandon McNulty

Ash Hudson would do anything to get back what she lost. But will she murder someone? A creek with an evil spirit makes promises and Ash doesn’t know if she can trust it — or anyone else. If you like small town supernatural horror, Bad Parts by Brandon McNulty is for you. Super creepy.

And here are some other books I recommend for Halloween reads:
