I recently saw the movie Wildcat, which was directed by Ethan Hawke. Wildcat told the story of Flannery O’Connor who navigated her writing career as she dealt with lupus. I could identify with O’Connor who had to endure the obstacle of her stories being misinterpreted. Everyone wants a story to be pretty. O’Connor wrote dark episodes of life in the south. She also struggled with her Catholic faith and wanted to serve the Lord, but could she do that through her somber tales. If you’ve read any of her material, you will enjoy seeing Maye Hawke portray O’Connor as well as characters from snippets of her stories. Laura Linney is also great as O’Connor’s mother as well as appearing in said snippets. If you haven’t read anything by her, I recommend you start with her short story collection A Good Man Is Hard to Find.
