In my last post, I pulled out a quote from a book called The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman. It made me realize I haven’t read that book in many years. It also made me realize I wanted to read it again.
Then I decided to make a list of books on writing instruction I want to read again. I came up with the following list:
- Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
- The Art of Fiction: Notes on Craft for Young Writers by John Gardner
- The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman
- Making Shapely Fiction by Jerome Stern
- Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne
- Consider This by Chuck Palahniuk
- The Art of War for Writers by James Scott Bell
In case you’re wondering why Stephen King’s On Writing isn’t on this list, here’s the reason: I just re-read it a few months ago. The experience is one of the reasons I’ve decided to revisit the above list.
I feel I’ve grown as a writer since I’ve read them and I believe I’ll get even more out of them the second (or in some cases, third) time around.
Which of the above books have you read?
