Friday’s Findings: Beasts of London Book Review

Hidden Secrets and Dangerous Choices

Murders in Victorian-era London are so savage they baffle the local authorities. These killings are so gory , they couldn’t have been done by an ordinary human. Supernatural beasts are named as the likely suspects.

The police turn to the only one with otherworldly experience: Cecil Morris. And the investigation begins.

Beasts of London enthralls with its mix of fantasy, gaslamp and noir. The story acquaints the reader with several fascinating characters: Cecil Morris, owner and director of the Morris Museum of supernatural Curiosities; Sir Felix Todd, Morris’s wealthy benefactor and friend; Lucy Todd, Felix Todd’s eldest daughter and a large critic of Cecil Morris. All these citizens of London have a dark secret. And those secrets force the characters to make dangerous choices throughout the story.

As the novel progresses, author K. C. Lannon unpeels the layers of each characters’ lives. While refined and upstanding on the surface, Morris realizes cracks are forming in his carefully laid wall that hides his questionable background. And the barricades that protect the secrets of the other characters crumble as well. Lannon does an excellent job of keeping the reader intrigued with who these people really are.

Beasts of London is a hidden gem. While the characters seem polished and respectable at first, they must choose whether or not to succumb to the sorcery that connects them all. An excellent read. Can’t wait for the next one in this series.
